A List Of Staples for The Kitchen
Due to the cold snowy winters here, and the fact that I hate
getting out in the mess, I have been working on a list of kitchen staples. Things I can purchase once a month, or less,
and make several different foods out of.
During this process I've also been looking for simple recipies that
contain little or similar items from this 'staples list'.
This is an attempt to cut my food bill and my gas bill...
And my time outdoors in the Northern Michigan winters.

Get to know your local wild plants. You might be surprised at what you learn.
Here, I am harvesting St. John's Wort.

Dig around in your barn or basement. You never know what you'll find.
I used this old clothes drying rack to make an outdoor drying rack. I used old window screen and
stapled it to the edges of the rack. It also folds up nicely for storage.
Works great for herbs, and this year I tried drying veggies in the sun on it. That to worked great.
If you plan to sun dry, do some research. And make sure it is going to be sunny. You'll
have to bring your rack in at night.

Places To Find Great Goodies
Shop second hand stores, yardsales and auctions. These are
great places to find storage jars and kitchen wares.
Get to know other homesteaders in your area. They have invaluble
information and may have more than advice to offer.
Hit your local farmers markets. Either set up with your wares
and produce or just go to chat with the locals.
Start a swap group. As homesteaders grow, the need for things
they used to start out with becomes less. Perhaps you have something they can use and you can offer to swap. This
is a great way to keep your costs at a minimum while still getting most of the things you need.
